Craftsman Series—Cores

Choose from many core varieties.

You can specify core type based on the needs of the project. Consider how the door is expected to perform. What outside environmental factors will the door be subjected to? How long is the door expected to last? Review these core options and talk to your Oregon Door rep for more insight.

Particleboard Core

Also known as PC core, particleboard core is the most economical choice you can make and is recommended for a wide range of commercial interior door applications.

Characteristics

Particleboard core offers good stability against warp and telegraphing and meets WDMA Heavy Duty and Extra Heavy Duty performance levels. Particleboard core is made from an abundant raw material source and meets many green building attributes.

Oregon Door sources, purchases and provides only no-added formaldehyde (NAF) particleboard.

Applications

Particleboard core is available as either non-rated or 20-minute fire-rated in a wide variety of hardwood, hardboard, and laminate faces.

Structural Composite Lumber Core

Also known as strand, timberstand, or SCL core, structural composite lumber core is virtually free from warping, splitting, and shrinking.

Characteristics

Easily meeting WDMA Extra Heavy Duty performance levels, structural composite lumber core allows for the flexibility of flush doors to full light doors with full warranty and without standard light lock restrictions. While more expensive than particleboard core, SCL is more economical than stave lumber core for which it is often a preferred substitute. Manufactured from resin-coated wood strands, SCL is made from a renewable resource and meets many green building attributes.

Applications

Structural composite lumber core is available as either non-rated or 20-minute fire-rated in a wide variety of hardwood, hardboard, and laminate faces.

Stave Lumber Core

Also known as stave, lumber, or sometimes simply solid core, stave lumber core is composed of solid wood blocks bonded together.

Characteristics

Stave lumber core can be used for full light doors and meets WDMA Extra Heavy Duty performance level. More expensive than both particleboard and structural composite lumber, stave lumber core is an older technology and was the first core used by commercial door manufacturers. Today, structural composite lumber is usually specified in place of stave lumber core. Stave lumber core is made from a renewable resource and meets several green building attributes.

Applications

Stave lumber core is available as either non-rated or 20-minute fire-rated in a wide variety of hardwood, hardboard, and laminate faces.

Fire-Rated Mineral Core

Also known as mineral core or simply fire core, fire-rated mineral core is composed of a proprietary mix of various minerals, fiberglass, and inert binders.

Characteristics

Fire-rated mineral core has excellent thermal properties and through-bolting is allowed, but it is not intended to provide screw-holding capabilities. Blocking is recommended for screw-attached hardware. Fire-rated mineral core meets WDMA Extra Heavy Duty performance level with appropriate blocking. Without blocking, it meets Standard Duty performance level.

Applications

Fire-rated mineral core is available with fire ratings of 45, 60, or 90 minutes in a wide variety of hardwood, hardboard, and laminate faces.

Agrifiber Core

Also known as wheat, straw, or ag core, agrifiber core is manufactured using abundant agricultural waste such as wheat husks, corn husks, or rice straw.

Characteristics

Agrifiber core’s performance is very similar to particleboard and meets the WDMA Extra Heavy Duty performance level. Agrifiber core is made from an abundant raw material sources and meets many green building attributes.

Applications

Agrifiber core is available as either non-rated or 20-minute fire-rated in a wide variety of hardwood, hardboard, and laminate faces.
